Standard Operating Procedure for Cleaning and Sealing Raw Pipes

Standard Operating Procedure for Cleaning and Sealing Raw Pipes

Authentic, heavy-duty raw black iron pipes delivers a rugged, industrial aesthetic that mass-produced retail furniture cannot match. Because raw steel components ship with a protective factory oil coating to prevent rust during warehouse storage and transit, proper surface preparation is a mandatory first step. Skipping the prep process leaves residual grease that can rub off on clothes, hands, and wood shelving.

Following this standard operating procedure ensures you thoroughly degrease your hardware, protect the raw metal from ambient humidity, and lock in a permanent finish for your custom furniture builds.

Step 1: Degreasing the Raw Hardware

Gather your pipes, floor flanges, and fittings on a flat work area. Wash all raw pipe components using a dedicated degreaser or standard liquid dish soap to strip away the heavy shipping oils. Working in small batches keeps the process manageable and ensures every fitting gets completely stripped of surface grease.

Step 2: Scrubbing Surfaces and Internal Threads

Take a stiff bristle brush and scrub the outer metal surfaces thoroughly to lift stubborn factory residue. Pay close attention to the internal thread channels of your tees, elbows, and flanges, where manufacturing oil tends to pool. Clearing these threaded zones ensures smooth, full-thread engagement when you assemble your frame.

Step 3: Rinsing and Immediate Drying

Rinse the hardware completely with clean water to remove all soap suds and loosened oil particles. Unprotected raw steel oxidizes rapidly when exposed to moisture, so you must dry every piece immediately with a clean towel. Avoid letting raw steel air-dry, or surface flash rust will form on the damp metal within minutes.

Step 4: Applying the Defensive Seal

Once your components are completely clean and dry, apply a protective topcoat to seal the raw metal permanently against ambient humidity. Coat the surfaces with a polyurethane spray, specialized metal paint, or a dedicated finishing wax. For an all-in-one prep solution, grab our Complete Clean and Seal Kit, which provides specialized degreasing wipes, a protective finishing wax, and micro-fiber cloths designed specifically to shield raw steel hardware.
