Knowing your fittings is half the build. When you look at a multi-tier industrial bookshelf or a standing desk, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But here is the secret: every piece of custom DIY furniture breaks down into a handful of standardized parts. Once you understand what each component does and how they connect, designing your own pipe furniture components becomes second nature.
We’re breaking down the anatomy of a build so you can stop guessing and start creating. Here is the fitting glossary covering the essential pieces you need to master your fall projects.
Floor flanges are the heavy-duty mounting plates that anchor your build. Featuring a flat, circular base with four countersunk screw holes and a raised, threaded center hub, flanges attach raw steel pipe to flat surfaces safely and securely.

Wall Mounting: When building wall-mounted pipe shelves or clothing racks, the flange sits perfectly flush against your drywall. This lets you drive heavy structural lag screws directly through the mounting holes and into the wooden wall studs, guaranteeing maximum load capacity.

The Assembly Rule: With traditional threaded hardware, you cannot slide a continuous, unbroken pipe completely through a tee. You must thread two separate pipe segments into the opposing ends to continue the line.

The Thread Engagement Rule: The stated length of a nipple refers to its total end-to-end measurement before assembly. Because industrial pipes use tapered NPT threads, about 1/2-inch to 5/8-inch of the pipe disappears into the fitting socket on each end as you tighten it. Account for this "lost" length when calculating the final height or width of your project.
Load Bearing Scale: Thicker pipe diameters (like 1-inch or 3/4-inch nominal size nipples) provide aggressive structural rigidity over long spans, making them perfect for desks and beds. 1/2-inch nipples are sleeker and better suited for shorter wall shelves or bar carts.

Sometimes your project requires a pipe length longer than what’s available off the shelf, or you’re trying to efficiently use leftover pieces from a previous build. A coupling is a simple, straight, internally threaded sleeve designed to connect two nipples end-to-end.
Seamless Extensions: Couplings let you join two 18-inch pipes to create a 36-inch span without needing to make a trip to a hardware store to get custom lengths cut and threaded.
Design Accents: Even if you don’t need to extend a pipe's length, adding couplings intermittently along a long vertical leg breaks up the visual monotony and adds extra mechanical texture.

Not every pipe line ends safely at a wall or a floor. When a pipe terminates in mid-air, leaving the hollow, threaded end exposed looks unfinished and collects dust. A cap simply threads over the exposed end of a pipe to seal it off cleanly.
Hooks and Pegs: If you’re building an entryway coat rack, a bathroom towel hook, or a wall-mounted mug holder, caps provide a smooth, rounded stopper so items don't slide off.
Alternative Feet: While wide floor flanges are the most stable option for massive desk feet, caps offer a low-profile, minimalist alternative. They work well as feet for smaller side tables, plant stands, or when you plan to attach rolling caster wheels.

When a standard three-way tee isn’t enough, it’s time to use a cross fitting. A cross features four threaded openings meeting at a central 90-degree intersection.
Grid Frameworks: Crosses are essential for building complex, grid-style shelving units where vertical load-bearing lines and horizontal support lines need to intersect cleanly.
Center Support Spans: On heavy-duty dining tables or double-desk layouts, a cross allows you to run an intersecting lateral support bar directly through the middle of an H-frame cross-brace, guaranteeing absolute rigidity.

Sometimes a build demands a heavy-duty structural base but requires a lighter aesthetic at the top. Reducers allow you to transition from one pipe diameter to another seamlessly within the same continuous line.
Tapered Design: A reducer features a larger female threaded socket on one end and a smaller female threaded socket on the other, acting as a structural funnel.
Visual Balance: You can use reducers to start a standing desk with aggressive 1-inch pipe base legs, and then taper down to standard 3/4-inch pipe for the upper framework.
