PIPE DECOR® DIY: Creating a Rustic Fall Centerpiece

Fall is more than just a season-it’s a feeling, a mood, and a moment in time. There’s an innate desire to draw the warmth and coziness of the season into our living spaces. Our homes are an extension of ourselves and should mirror the seasonal shift. And what better way to capture this essence than with a rustic fall centerpiece? At the heart of this decor is an industrial pipe candle holder – a quick and easy DIY project to add to your fall decor. And by combining the rugged charm of industrial pipes with quintessential fall decor elements, you can craft an autumn centerpiece that invites the season's essence to your tables—excited to start building? Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a rustic fall centerpiece for your home.

If you’re planning on including fresh flowers, you’ll need floral foam or moss.

Prepping Your Materials

Before you start assembling the candle holder, you’ll need to clean and seal the pipes first. PIPE DECOR® pipes and fittings are made of real industrial steel. All our black pipes and fittings come coated with a thin layer of oil to prevent rust during storage and transit. It’s important to clean pipes and fittings before assembly to avoid making a mess.

To clean pipes and fittings, you can use regular de-greasing dish soap and warm water to wash and clean the protective oil off them. Once you’ve cleaned the oil coating off the pipes, dry them with a washcloth. Make sure that you dry each pipe and fitting thoroughly before sealing them to make sure that the sealant sticks to the pipes.

For sealing, you can do it two ways. First is with a polyurethane matte or satin finish spray. This is the easier method as all you’ll need to do is spray the solution to the entirety of the pipe’s surface and wait about 20 minutes for it to dry.

Another method is to use a finishing wax. With this method, you simply need to coat the pipe with wax, ensuring that every surface is covered. Wait 20 minutes and start polishing. Using a dry washcloth, polish the pipes to your desired sheen. The faster you wipe, the shinier the finish.

Cleaning and sealing is an important first step in prepping pipes and fittings for any DIY project as this helps protect your pipes from rusting and will help them last longer. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s start assembling your pipe candle holder.

Adding Seasonal Touches

This is where the fun begins! Decorate your centerpiece with fall decor items - pumpkins, pinecones, and dried leaves. Think about the colors of fall and incorporate them into your design to truly capture the essence of the season. As the sun sets, light the candles to cast a warm glow over your table, enhancing the ambiance.

Add Finishing Touches with Fresh Florals

To add more of the season to your centerpiece, consider adding blooms in fall colors. This softens the industrial edge of pipes and infuses more life into the setup. To do this, simply add floral foam or moss into your setup and push the stems in.

Additional Tips for a Perfect Centerpiece

Although a simple fall centerpiece can help bring the season indoors, there are some more ways for you to elevate and perfect your design.

Balance - Your centerpiece should have balance not only in weight but also visually. Don’t put too much decor on one end while leaving the other end bare. Add a balanced amount of decor to make it more visually appealing. If one end has tall elements, balance it out on the opposite end.

Mix and Match - Don’t be afraid to mix and match other elements into your design. You’d be surprised at what combining different materials can do to your centerpiece. Glass, wood, and metal pipes can come together to create a harmonious look.

Keep it Seasonal - Pumpkin is most associated with the fall season, but you don’t have to go with pumpkins for your decor at all. Consider other seasonal fruits like apples or pears to add a different touch to your decor.

And there you have it, an industrial pipe candle holder you can use as a rustic fall centerpiece. We hope this DIY tutorial has helped inspire you to create your centerpiece for this season. Just remember that the essence of fall decor lies in its ability to make spaces warm inviting, and reminiscent of the season's beauty. So, as you go on designing and creating your centerpiece for fall, let those principles guide you to create a one-of-a-kind decor to bring the warmth of fall to your home with a cozy industrial touch. Happy decorating!
